A robust meta-search tool with convenient features like automatic
removal of dead links, saved and recurrent searches, and a preview of
the result websites. Freeware with optional paid upgrades.
Crazy Browser
An alternative browser with a tabbed interface and built-in pop-up
blocker. Useful for surfing multiple webpages at one time.

GoogleAlert
A tool designed to save and re-execute a Google query each day.
This service is not affiliated with Google but rather uses a
Google-provided API to conduct queries. It is a web-based utility
that requires registration. Free.
Google Toolbar
Add a toolbar to your browser to allow instant Google searches.
Includes pop-up blocking, automatic URL truncation, and the ability to
highlight or jump to your keywords on the result page. Freeware.
Sam Spade
Website featuring useful Web and domain investigation tools including whois, traceroute, an obfuscated URL decoder, and reverse DNS query.
A downloadable software tool offering advanced features is also
available. Freeware.

UC Berkley Internet Guides
Excellent tutorials on web searching provided by the University of
California at Berkley library. Topics include Boolean searching,
invisible web, evaluating websites, and research strategies.
Internet Basics
Introductory information provided by the State University of New York at
Albany on the structure and components of the Internet and the World
Wide Web. Also includes several tutorials on Internet searching.
Validating Internet Sources
A resource from the Sheridan Libraries from The Johns Hopkins
University. This guide explains various methods for validating Web
resources. Additional validation guides can be found on the
library sites of most major universities.

An online encyclopedia of how various computing technologies operate,
provided by HowStuffWorks. This site provides excellent content
with descriptive diagrams in an easy-to-read format. In addition

This site is caters to web administrators who wish to improve
their sites rank in search engine result sets but the content is useful
for investigators too. They offer searching tips, articles on the
latest search technologies, and track search engines by various metrics.
Utica College
Located in Utica, New York, this institution offers an undergraduate
degree in Economic Crime Investigation and a Master's degree in Economic
Crime Management. These unique programs combine the study of

An online encyclopedia and dictionary dedicated to computer terminology.
Excellent tool for deciphering acronyms or unfamiliar technological
jargon. The plain english definitions are in easy to comprehend.
